Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
If the system is more than 12 to 15 years old, still runs on R-22 refrigerant, or needs a repair that costs more than about a third of a new system, replacement usually makes more sense. We'll lay out both options with prices so you can decide.
My AC is running but the house isn't cooling. What should I check?
Start with the air filter and the breaker for the outdoor unit. If the filter is clean and the outdoor fan is running, the usual causes are a frozen coil, low refrigerant or a failed capacitor. Turn the system off so the coil can thaw and give us a call.
How often should I change my air filter?
Every one to three months for a standard 1-inch filter. Check it monthly if you have pets, allergies or recent construction. Thicker 4 to 5-inch media filters usually last six months to a year.
How often does my system need maintenance?
Once a year for each side: the air conditioner in spring and the furnace in fall. Heat pumps do both jobs, so they should be looked at twice a year.
